Sous-bois. Forestal Stories from Underwater

Monica Ursina Jäger

Monica Ursina Jäger (1974) lives and works in London and Zurich. Her practice, which includes drawing, collage, installation, and video, is built around a multidisciplinary reflection on the concepts of space, landscape, and architecture, investigating the multiple relationships within varied ecosystems. Her works trace the entanglements of post-natural landscapes, the action of organic and inorganic matter on the environment, and the continuities and discontinuities of time.

Fun Fact

Seagrass meadows are vital for many species of fish, which can spawn, shelter or hunt there. These biotopes are made up of aquatic plants that can reach up to 10m in European lakes, and can cover huge areas at sea. Posidonia is a typical species in the Mediterranean, where it covers thousands of square kilometers. In addition to providing valuable environments, these aquatic plants are also said to provide half of the oxygen we breathe!

Continuation of the instruction

The easiest aquatic plants to observe are those found stranded on the edges of lakes or rivers. These freshwater 'sea strands' constitute an unsuspected biotope; by examining them more closely, count the different animals that find food, shelter and nests there!
